My Story
I played basketball in high school and college. I knew pretty early on that I was never going to play professionally, but I still wanted to do something in the sports and fitness realm. I ultimately earned my Bachelors Degree in Health and Fitness from Central Michigan University and my Masters Degree in Exercise Science from Oakland University. I spent fifteen years in the fitness and physical therapy industry as a trainer, nutritional counselor, weight loss instructor and general manager of multiple clubs in the Metro Detroit area. In 2008 I was burnt out and made a major career change. I left the industry and began teaching Sports Medicine at a career tech high school. I now teach Sports Med, Health Sciences and an NCSF Personal Training certification class for high school students in my community. In 2016 I completed my Masters in Education. Although I no longer work in the industry on a full time basis, I have continued to train some of my long term clients over the last 18 years.
However, none of that is why I decided to start Zaybel Fitness. Like you, I am a regular person who made a commitment to getting into better shape. On April 1, 2025 I came home from Spring Break in the worst shape of my life. I was the heaviest I had ever been. I felt awful and did not like what I saw in the mirror. I made a commitment to change my lifestyle and ultimately my life. I began eating better and got back to the gym on a regular basis. By Christmas Day, 2025 I was down 50 pounds. I was also able to get of my BP and cholesterol meds. Along the way it reignited my love for fitness and nutrition. Today, at 55 I am leaner than I was at 35. I did all of this with a heart condition and back issues. That said, I will never be on the cover of a fitness magazine. Do they even still print those? I am not a 25 year old with perfect abs and huge biceps. And I am not saying there is anything wrong with that. There are some great trainers out there and if you want to be a competitive bodybuilder or a fitness model, I'm probably not the right one for you. But, if you are a regular person, with a busy schedule, or you have some health issues, I have lived that and I know exactly what it takes to change.
