Glycine and NAC
Today's breakdown is a two for one. Although both are very different, they can also work together.
Just a reminder, I am not a doctor. This is for informational use only. Please consult a physician before starting any new supplements or discontinuing your prescription meds.
Glycine is a non-essential amino acid, but don't let that fool you. Non-essential just means our body can make it from other amino acids. It has been gaining popularity as a supplement that can help you fall asleep faster. It does this by lowering our body temperature and calming our brain. Glycine also forms about one third of the amino acid sequence that makes up collagen, supporting healthy skin, joints and bones. It is also plays a role in our metabolism by aiding in the production of creatine, DNA, RNA and bile acids. Finally it is a precursor to glutathione, a major antioxidant that protects cells from damage. It is available in pill or powder form. Typical dosage is around 3-5g per day.
NAC is short for N-acetylcystine. It is commonly used as an emergency treatment for acetaminophen poisoning, helping to prevent severe liver damage. It also acts as a mucolytic agent to help loosen thick mucus in airways. However, it is not fast acting like many prescription or OTC meds. It is meant to be more of a preventative/maintenance treatment. It has been studied for it's effect on neurotransmitters. It can help regulate glutamate levels in the brain, which supports mood and brain function. It has even shown promise in managing symptoms of psychiatric disorders, OCD and substance use. Finally, like glycine, it is a direct building block for glutathione, helping protect cells from oxidative stress and damage. It can generally be taken on an empty stomach. Dosage is about 600 mg/day, with some studies showing up to 3000 mg.
GlyNAC is simply combining the two. In addition to the antioxidant benefits already mentioned, it can improve mitochondrial function to fight physical and cognitive decline. It has been shown to improve muscle strength, walking speed and overall exercise capacity. It may also improve insulin resistance, reduce belly fat and help manage blood sugar. Final the combo may help in fighting aging. It can reduce chronic inflammation, protect genes from damage and support brain health.
Please remember that many supplements may affect how your other medications may work. Please check with a doctor before adding these or replacing a prescription medication.
